According to a report by CBC News, Canadians voted on Monday to keep the current Liberal government in power for another four years, expressing confidence that Prime Minister Mark Carney will be able to handle U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and his aggressive stance towards Canada.
Carney, who previously served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada and later the Bank of England, reassured Canadians by leveraging his financial expertise, stating that he is prepared to manage the economic volatility stemming from a tariff war and a new trade deal with Trump.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre campaigned on a message of change, claiming that the Liberal government had been stagnant for 10 years under Justin Trudeau. However, his message was not strong enough to secure a win.
Canadians rejected Poilievre’s message, delivering him a bitter defeat, especially given that he had led the Liberals by a significant margin in the polls for months. But the tide turned when the deeply unpopular Trudeau resigned and political newcomer Carney took over the Liberal leadership. The Liberals quickly gained momentum in public opinion polls, overtaking the Conservatives, and by April 27, the final day of voting, they held a four-point lead.
Voters embraced Carney as someone who could provide a steady hand in government while facing tough challenges from Trump. However, Carney has never held political office before, let alone Canada's highest position.
This election ultimately turned into a two-party contest, with the New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Jagmeet Singh never truly entering the competitive race.
The election was held for all 343 seats across the country, with a party needing at least 172 seats to form a majority government.
Due to Canada’s vast geography, the country spans six time zones. As vote counting is still underway, it remains uncertain whether Carney will be able to form a majority or will have to lead a minority government.
