Responding to the heartbreaking news just a day after meeting the Pope in person, Vance shared his grief.

In a statement, Vance said:

"I have just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians around the world who loved him."

"Just yesterday I had the honor of meeting this great leader, and today he is no longer with us — it is deeply painful for me."

Vance arrived in Rome last Friday and held meetings with Vatican officials on Saturday. On the same day, he had a brief private audience with Pope Francis.

Speaking about the encounter, Vance added:
