Gaza’s Palestinian Suffering Comparable to the Agonizing Death of Jesus Christ – Colombian President Gustavo Petro

On Friday night, Colombian President Gustavo Petro harshly criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza, comparing the suffering of the Palestinian people to the pain and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Petro wrote:

“In the agonizing moment of Jesus’ death and crucifixion, let us remember the Palestinians — from where he came — who are now victims of a bloody genocide.”

He made the comment in response to a post about Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who is reportedly in critical condition after allegedly being tortured in Israeli custody.
Israeli forces detained Dr. Safiya earlier this year. In recent weeks, human rights organizations and local media have raised serious concerns about his deteriorating health and reports of severe abuse while in detention.

Petro’s statement came during Holy Week, a sacred time for Christians, adding symbolic weight to his message. The Colombian president has previously denounced Israel’s military operations in Gaza multiple times, labeling them as war crimes.

The Israeli government, however, has denied the accusations, stating that its military campaign is solely aimed at Hamas militants, not at civilians or medical personnel.
