London, April 19, 2025 —
According to a report by news agency Reuters, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and U.S. President Donald Trump held a significant phone conversation in which they discussed trade, the war in Ukraine, Iran, and the Houthis in Yemen, Downing Street confirmed in a statement.
The UK is seeking a trade agreement with the United States, especially at a time when President Trump has imposed a 10% import tariff on British goods and 25% tariffs on cars, steel, and aluminum.
A Downing Street spokesperson said,
“Both leaders began the conversation by discussing the ongoing and constructive trade talks between the United Kingdom and the United States.”
Prime Minister Starmer made it clear that he is committed to free trade, but also emphasized that protecting national interests is equally important to him.
Topics of Ukraine, Iran, and Yemen
In addition to trade, the leaders discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine, escalating tensions with Iran, and recent U.S. actions against the Houthis in Yemen.
Analysts believe that this phone call could play a key role in shaping the future of UK-U.S. relations, especially in light of the Trump administration’s new tariff policies.
