Washington, D.C. —
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order allowing federal agencies to relocate their offices outside of Washington, D.C.

The executive order states:

“The American people live across more than 3.8 million square miles of cities, suburbs, and rural communities. To provide the highest quality services efficiently and cost-effectively, executive departments and agencies must be closer to the people they serve.”

The order reverses two prior directives issued by former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, which had encouraged federal offices to be located in the nation’s capital, central business districts, and historic buildings.

The new order explains:

“Revoking these prior orders restores common sense to federal office management. It allows agencies to choose more cost-effective locations and better focus on executing their missions effectively for American taxpayers.”
