China on Friday announced the latest move in its ongoing trade war with the United States, raising tariffs on American goods from 84% to 125%. The new tariffs will go into effect starting Saturday.
While U.S. President Donald Trump has paused imposing high tariffs on other countries, the tariff battle between the United States and China continues unabated. The Trump administration has imposed a total of 145% tariffs on Chinese products.
On Wednesday, Trump announced that a 125% tariff would be implemented on Chinese goods, but he did not mention an additional 20% tariff that had been applied due to China's role in the production of fentanyl.
A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce stated in an official release:
"The United States' unusually high tariffs on Chinese goods have now become merely a numbers game, lacking any real economic rationale. This will go down as a laughable chapter in the history of global economics. However, if the U.S. continues to seriously infringe on China’s interests, we will respond firmly — and fight to the end."
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce also announced that it is once again filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the United States' tariff hike.
