Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Invited as Special Guest to Russia's 80th Victory Day Parade
Moscow, April 9, 2025: Russia has officially invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the Victory Day Parade on May 9 in Moscow, which will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko confirmed the invitation. However, formal confirmation of the visit is still pending, as discussions between the two countries are ongoing.
Rudenko stated, "The work is ongoing, and it should happen this year. The invitation has been extended to him." This means that Russia and India are still in talks regarding Modi's visit, and Moscow hopes he will attend the important event. The Victory Day Parade held every year in Red Square, Moscow, is a significant occasion showcasing Russia’s military and historical heritage.
Indian military sources have indicated that Prime Minister Modi's participation is likely, but no official confirmation has yet been received from Delhi. This year, Russia has also invited leaders from several "friendly countries" to take part in the parade. The event, held on May 9, commemorates Germany's surrender in 1945 and honors the victory over the Soviet-led invasion.
In line with Prime Minister Modi’s potential visit, discussions are underway regarding the participation of an Indian army contingent. If confirmed, this unit will arrive in Russia a month before the parade for retraining. This would be seen as a significant step in military cooperation between India and Russia.
Prime Minister Modi last visited Russia in July 2024, where he held detailed discussions with President Vladimir Putin and invited him to visit India. While Putin accepted the invitation, the date of his visit has not yet been announced. The invitation to Modi reflects the strong ties between Russia and India.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, "We are ready to welcome foreign dignitaries who acknowledge the importance of Victory Day." Modi's potential presence amidst ongoing global tensions signifies the continuity of India-Russia relations. Despite Western pressures, India has maintained its neutral stance and increased economic cooperation with Russia. Bilateral trade between the two countries exceeded $65 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year, and they plan to raise this figure to $100 billion by 2030.
