U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen indicated that Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan could benefit from reduced tariffs if they strike a deal to purchase U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Bessen told CNBC that while "many discussions will take place," the final deal will depend on what kind of proposals each country's trade partners offer.
For example, he referenced a major energy deal in Alaska, where Japan, and possibly South Korea or Taiwan, would provide financing for the deal.
Additionally, Trump has raised the possibility of an energy deal with South Korea. On Truth Social, he mentioned that he had a "great" phone conversation with South Korea's acting President Han Duck-Soo.
"We discussed their extraordinary and volatile surplus, tariffs, shipbuilding, large-scale purchases of U.S. LNG, the Alaska pipeline project joint venture, and the major military security we provide to South Korea," Trump said.
