Washington, April 8, 2025: On Saturday, under the "Hands Off!" movement, left-wing protesters in Washington Park shared their views on what their "ideal America" should be. They included demands for homosexuality, transgender rights, and a diverse life as part of their vision for an ideal America. President Donald Trump had stated during his inauguration that there would be no gender other than male and female in America.
An unidentified, masked protester said, "For me, an ideal America is one where people can protest like this and have their voices heard, where the country is led by people who lead the nation, not someone who has seized control and is denying First Amendment rights."
Josh, a resident of Queens, expressed the same sentiment, saying, "An ideal America would be a place where its citizens can live with dignity, in peace and prosperity, where we can exercise our freedom of speech and constitutional rights without fear."
Additionally, Mae, a resident of Manhattan, expressed a desire for diversity and peace in her ideal America. She said, "It’s diverse, though it has become a bad word now, but here women’s rights and freedom will exist, and we will live in peace."
Mary, a protester from Queens, emphasized the importance of civil rights, gay rights, access to adequate food and healthcare for all, and a helping attitude towards other countries in her vision for an ideal America.
Yalena, a long-time resident from Ukraine, stated, "An ideal America would be a country that works for the rights of more people and shares those privileges with those who are privileged. Our goal is to work towards equality for all and a democratic world."
Wendy, a professor from New Jersey, spoke about ensuring social security systems and adequate livelihoods in her ideal America, so that everyone can earn enough money to support themselves and their families.
These protests took place last weekend in New York City and are considered the largest opposition movement since the beginning of Trump’s second term.
