Washington: President Donald Trump said on Monday that he is "not considering taking a tariff break" and has no plans to do so. However, he expressed an open-minded approach to negotiating agreements with various countries.
Speaking to reporters at the White House after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said, "We’re not looking at that. We have many countries coming to us to make deals, and they will be fair deals. In some cases, they may have to give significant tariffs. These deals will be fair."
Last Wednesday, Trump announced a 10% minimum tariff that will apply to all imported goods, with higher tariffs being imposed on major U.S. trading partners like China and the European Union.
He also spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishibara on Monday morning, stating, "One thing I said is that your country will need to open up because we don’t sell a single car in Japan, but they sell millions of cars in our country."
Trump further noted that nearly every country wants to negotiate with the United States, including Israel, which has a 17% tariff on its products. However, he expressed doubts about reducing tariffs on Israel.
He said, "This could be a new trade deal, but maybe not. But don’t forget, we help Israel a lot. We give them $4 billion every year, which is a lot of money."
Meanwhile, Netanyahu said that they will try to quickly address the trade deficit with the U.S. and have promised to remove trade barriers.
