North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visits the training camp of the Korean People's Army's special operations unit
Seoul, April 5 (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited the military training camp of the Korean People's Army's special operations unit on Friday, according to state media reports published on Saturday.
Kim observed various training activities of the special operations units and a competition in small arms shooting, which was part of the training program. Kim stated, "Strengthening the special operations forces is a major part of the current military force-building strategy," according to KCNA (Korean Central News Agency).
Kim Jong Un further emphasized that strengthening the special operations forces is a critical aspect of the current military strategy, and he has outlined a series of key tasks to enhance their operational capabilities. KCNA did not provide detailed information regarding these tasks.
During the visit, Kim also inspected a sniper rifle, which will be newly supplied to the special operations units. He expressed satisfaction with the performance and power of the sniper rifle, which was developed using North Korean technology.
South Korea has reported that thousands of North Korean special operations troops have been sent to Russia to participate in the Ukraine war. Analysts suggest that North Korea could gain battlefield experience by supplying weapons and troops, though Kyiv claims that they have suffered significant losses.
Initially, both Moscow and Pyongyang denied these reports, but in October 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin, without providing an answer, confirmed that North Korean troops were in Russia, and a North Korean official also stated that such actions would be legal.
