Rise of a New Generation: Balendra Shah Becomes Nepal’s Prime Minister
In a historic shift in Nepali politics, Balendra Shah has assumed office as the country’s new Prime Minister. He was formally sworn in on March 27, 2026, becoming one of the youngest leaders in Nepal’s history to hold the position.
Balendra Shah, popularly known as “Balen,” is being hailed as a transformative figure in Nepali politics. He first gained recognition as a rapper and civil engineer, using his music to highlight social injustices and corruption, which made him especially popular among the youth.
Shah entered politics in 2022, winning the mayoral election in Kathmandu. As mayor, he quickly gained acclaim for his focus on transparency, urban development, and anti-corruption initiatives. His successful tenure propelled him to the national political stage.
The 2025 “Gen-Z” anti-corruption movement in Nepal brought significant political change. The protests, which led to the resignation of then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, were fueled by public outrage over the deaths of several demonstrators. This movement created a demand for new leadership and reform.
Against this backdrop, Shah’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) achieved a landslide victory in the general elections held on March 5, 2026. The party won 182 out of 275 seats, securing a rare single-party majority in Nepal’s recent history.
During his campaign, Shah focused on fighting corruption, creating employment, and empowering youth. His popularity among young voters played a key role in his electoral success.
Analysts describe Shah’s rise as a “youth-led rebellion against the old political system.” Since 1990, Nepal has seen over 30 government changes, reflecting ongoing political instability. Shah has promised to establish a stable and reform-oriented government.
However, he faces significant challenges. Addressing economic crises, unemployment, and corruption, as well as ensuring justice for the 2025 protest-related violence, are pressing tasks. The investigation and arrest of former Prime Minister Oli remain an important political test for the new administration.
Overall, Balendra Shah’s leadership marks the beginning of a new era in Nepali politics—one driven by youth leadership, accountability, and a strong push for reform.
