China Announces 34% Tariff on U.S. Goods Starting April 10, Says Foreign Ministry Spokesperson
Beijing: China announced on Friday that it will impose a 34% tariff on U.S. goods starting April 10. This comes one day after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a similar 34% tariff on Chinese goods as part of his response to China's tariff plans.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Geng Shuang, stated, "The U.S. has violated World Trade Organization rules by imposing tariffs on goods from many countries, including China. This is completely wrong and harms the multilateral trade system. China firmly rejects this move and will take whatever steps are necessary to protect our legitimate rights and interests."
He further added, "We have repeatedly stated that there is no winner in a trade and tariff war. Protectionism leads nowhere. We urge the U.S. to resolve trade issues with China and other countries on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, instead of going down the wrong path."
China's 34% tariff announcement is in addition to the 20% tariffs previously imposed on China by the Trump administration. Trump stated that his tariff plans would bring jobs back to American workers and restore the American dream. He said, "We see many American workers who have lost their jobs because of foreign leaders. We will now prosper again and use trillions of dollars to reduce our national debt."
This trade announcement has created uncertainty for Americans regarding the cost of goods, but White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt stated in a briefing on Tuesday that the tariff plan "will be effective."
