Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to acquire Greenland. In a speech in Murmansk, Putin revealed that the U.S. has been planning to take control of Greenland since 1860, and this is not a new idea. His comments come at a time when U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha are visiting Greenland.

Putin stated, "This is not a laughable discussion, it is a serious matter." He further explained that after World War II, the U.S. had proposed buying Greenland from Denmark. Putin said, "The U.S. plan for Greenland is the result of a long history, and it is clear that the U.S. wants to maintain its geopolitical, military, and economic interests in the Arctic region."

Russia and Greenland's Relationship:

Russia has long been interested in safeguarding its geopolitical interests in the Arctic region. Specifically, Greenland’s location is strategically important for Russia, as it is crucial for U.S. national security, especially in relation to the potential path of Russian missiles. Russia is looking to increase its military presence and strengthen its regional military capabilities in the north.

Is Putin Supporting Trump's Plan?

Through his comments, it is clear that Putin is supporting the U.S.'s interest in Greenland, but he also wants to protect Russia's own geopolitical interests. Putin’s advisor, Kirill Dmitriev, mentioned that they are interested in jointly exploring investment opportunities in the Arctic and other regions.

Greenland’s Opposition to the Plan:

The people of Greenland are completely opposed to this plan and are keen on preserving their independence. A recent survey showed that 85% of Greenlanders are unwilling to join the United States. Former Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, stated, "We do not want to be part of Denmark, nor do we want to be part of America. We just want to be Greenland."

Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha are on a visit to Greenland. The trip, initially planned for three days, has been reduced to a one-day visit due to protests from Greenland and Denmark. The purpose of the visit is to inspect the U.S. military base in Greenland.
