March 29 — U.S. Vice President JD Vance sharply criticized Denmark during his visit to Greenland on Friday, claiming that Denmark has not taken sufficient steps to ensure Greenland's security and failed to protect the people of Greenland from interference by aggressive countries like Russia and China.

While visiting the U.S. military base at Pituffik in Greenland, Vance said, "Denmark has not devoted enough resources and attention to protecting this base, protecting our troops, and, in my view, protecting the people of Greenland," though he did not provide details on the alleged interference.

Vance further stated that Russia, China, and other countries are showing "extraordinary interest" in the Arctic's waterways, naval routes, and mineral resources, and the U.S. will send more military resources, ships, and icebreakers, increasing their presence in the region.

Greenland's new Prime Minister referred to the U.S. visit as a "disrespect" and called for unity in the face of external pressure.

Denmark's King Frederik expressed support on social media, stating, "We live in a changed reality. There should be no doubt that my love for Greenland and my connection to the people of Greenland remain intact."

During his visit, Vance met with U.S. troops at the Pituffik military base and thanked them for their service.

U.S. President Donald Trump also remarked during the visit, "We consider Greenland to be very important, and it is essential for international security." He further added, "The presence of Chinese and Russian ships in Greenland's waterways is increasing, and the U.S. will take action to manage this situation, without relying on Denmark or any other country."

The U.S. delegation, which included National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Vance's wife Usha, was initially planning for Usha to visit a dog-sled race, but due to objections from Greenland and Denmark's authorities, the U.S. delegation limited their visit to the military base and did not meet the public.

Under a 1951 agreement, the U.S. is entitled to visit its military base at any time, provided they notify Greenland and Copenhagen. Pituffik is located along the shortest route from Europe to North America and is crucial for the U.S. ballistic missile warning system.
