Istanbul, Turkey: Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul and the main rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been arrested by Turkish police on charges of corruption and links to terrorism. He was detained early Wednesday morning during a raid on his residence. According to the state-run Anadolu news agency, arrest warrants have been issued for nearly 100 people, including his close aide, Murat Ongun.

A New Dimension of Political Suppression: This arrest is being viewed as part of the ongoing crackdown by Erdogan's government on opposition parties. It comes after the ruling party's significant defeat in local elections last year and increasing calls for early national elections. However, the government claims that the judiciary operates independently and that legal actions against opposition leaders are not politically motivated.

Imamoglu's Statement: Before his arrest, Imamoglu released a video message saying, "We are facing enormous oppression, but I want to tell you that I will not be discouraged. The government is trying to deprive the people of their will." His party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), condemned the arrest as an "attempted military coup."

Stock Market and Currency Reaction: Following the news of Imamoglu's arrest, the main index of the Istanbul Stock Exchange dropped by 7%, prompting a temporary suspension of trading to stabilize the market. The value of the Turkish lira also fell by 7% against the dollar.

Charges Against Imamoglu: Anadolu reports that Imamoglu is facing charges of money laundering, tender rigging through corruption, and supporting the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The allegations suggest that he formed an alliance with Kurdish organizations during the Istanbul municipal elections, which allegedly supported the PKK.

Diploma Revoked: Just a day before his arrest, Istanbul University revoked Imamoglu’s diploma, which would prevent him from running for president in the future. According to Turkish law, a university degree is mandatory to run for office.

Opposition's Response: CHP Chairman Oğuzhan Ozel said, "This operation is aimed at obstructing the determination of the nation’s next president. It is an attempt at a coup." The pro-Kurdish People’s Equality and Democracy Party condemned the arrest, stating that it undermines trust in justice.

Imamoglu’s Political Rise: Imamoglu became Istanbul’s mayor in 2019, ending the 25-year rule of Erdogan’s party in the city. After the election was annulled, he won again in the second round. His victory in last year's mayoral election solidified him as a significant challenge to Erdogan's party.

Legal Challenges: Imamoglu is currently facing multiple legal cases, including a conviction for insulting members of the election commission in 2022, and he is at risk of political sanctions. There are also ongoing investigations into his alleged influence in judicial matters.

Presidential Candidacy Uncertain: Imamoglu was set to be the CHP's presidential candidate in Sunday's primaries, but his candidacy is now uncertain. Analysts believe that this arrest will deepen Turkey's political crisis, where Erdogan has expressed intentions to remain in power until 2028 and pursue a new term.
