King Charles III to Visit Vatican City to Meet Pope Francis – Buckingham Palace

London, March 18: King Charles III of the United Kingdom is set to visit the Vatican next month to meet Pope Francis. This visit is seen as a reflection of optimism regarding the Pope’s improving health, as he continues to recover from double pneumonia.

The 88-year-old Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after his longstanding bronchitis worsened. Doctors initially identified a complex viral, bacterial, and fungal infection before confirming pneumonia in both lungs. However, the Vatican announced on Monday that the Pope’s health is gradually improving, and therefore, regular updates on his condition will no longer be provided.

Buckingham Palace stated that King Charles had personally written a letter to the Pope during his illness. His upcoming visit is seen as a symbol of strengthening ties between the Catholic Church and the Church of England.

Since ascending the throne in 2022, King Charles has prioritized fostering connections among people of different faiths.

King Charles' Italy Visit: Key Highlights

King Charles’ visit to Italy will begin on April 7 and will last for three days. During this trip, he will participate in several significant events across different Italian cities, including Rome, which surrounds Vatican City.

While in Rome, Charles will emphasize the strong relationship between the United Kingdom and Italy. Both countries are NATO members and have been working together to reinforce support for Ukraine. As part of his visit, Italy’s aerobatic team "Frecce Tricolori" and Britain’s "Red Arrows" will perform a joint aerial display over Rome.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will also attend a reception in the northern Italian city of Ravenna, in the Emilia-Romagna region, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the city's liberation from Nazi occupation. Additionally, they will meet local farmers affected by recent floods.

One of the major highlights of King Charles’ Vatican visit will be his historic tour of the "St. Paul’s Outside the Walls" Papal Basilica, where he will deliver a message of unity and reconciliation among Christian communities.

This moment holds historical significance, as English monarchs had a special connection with this basilica before their separation from the Roman Catholic Church. The church is believed to be the burial site of Saint Paul, dating back nearly 2,000 years.
