Washington, March 18: U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have once again spoken over the phone. This marks their second phone conversation and the first since January.
The call, which began at 10:00 AM EDT, is still ongoing, with Trump and Putin discussing the situation in Ukraine. The White House has stated that they are negotiating a 30-day ceasefire proposal to end the war.
Trump said, "Many elements of a final agreement have been agreed upon, but much remains to be resolved." He added, "Thousands of young soldiers and others are dying. Each week, 2,500 soldiers are being killed, and this must stop NOW."
White House spokesperson Dan Scavino confirmed that the call is going well and remains in progress. This follows Trump’s post on Truth Social last night, where he stated, "Many elements of the final agreement have been settled, but much still remains."
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin and Trump are discussing the Ukraine war but noted that there are "a large number of questions" regarding the normalization of U.S.-Russia relations.
Last week, a ceasefire proposal was discussed during diplomatic talks in Saudi Arabia, where both parties expressed support for an agreement. The proposal includes an immediate 30-day ceasefire and the resumption of U.S. military aid to Ukraine. Ukraine has agreed to the proposal, and the decision now rests with Russia.
This marks the second conversation between Trump and Putin since their last discussion in February. At that time, Trump said, "We discussed the strengths of our nations and the great benefits we can achieve by working together. But first, as we both agreed, we must stop the millions of deaths occurring in the Russia-Ukraine war."
This is a developing story—stay tuned for updates.
