The United States has imposed a visa ban and suspended assistance programs in Cambodia

On July 23rd, the United States imposed a visa ban and suspended certain foreign assistance programs in Cambodia, citing concerns over the lack of free and fair elections and allegations of human rights abuses. The Cambodian general election results were announced, and it was observed that the election was neither free nor fair. The opposition parties, media, and civil societies had criticized the election, and the constitution was also disregarded.

In response to the election-related issues and to show their displeasure towards those involved, the United States issued the visa ban and suspended some foreign assistance programs. However, the US government also extended an invitation to the ruling party to consider organizing a genuine international election where all political parties could participate freely and where there would be an end to political repression. The media should also be allowed to operate independently without interference.

In the recent Cambodian election held on July 23rd, there were no significant opposition parties as they had been excluded through various means, leaving only the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen to contest the election. Hun Sen, the self-proclaimed “democratic” leader, has been in power since 1985, making him the longest-serving leader in Asia. During his rule, he has maintained his power through strict measures against opposition parties, even using the country’s military and police to suppress dissent.

Despite the visa ban and suspension of assistance programs, Hun Sen’s CPP won 120 out of 125 seats in the election, while the affiliated opposition party, the Funcinpec Party, won 5 seats.

The situation in Cambodia remains a matter of concern for the international community due to the lack of genuine political competition and human rights issues.
