Brussels, March 17 – Ahead of the upcoming international donors' conference in Brussels, Germany has signaled strong European support for Syria’s economic reconstruction and political transformation.

In a statement, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that after more than a decade of civil war, Syria now faces new opportunities and challenges.

"Three and a half months after the fall of the Assad government, the Syrian people stand at the threshold of a peaceful future," Baerbock stated. However, she expressed concern over recent sectarian violence in Syria’s coastal regions.

She warned that these recent violent incidents have raised fears of renewed conflict, both domestically and internationally.

"In this situation, it is crucial to take urgent steps for political inclusion so that all Syrian communities—regardless of ethnicity, religion, or gender—are part of the national transformation process," Baerbock emphasized.

Brussels Conference and Germany’s Commitment

She highlighted that the 9th International Conference, organized under the European Union’s initiative, will provide an opportunity for discussions with the Syrian government, focusing on various aspects of the country's economic recovery.

"Rebuilding Syria politically, economically, and socially is a massive challenge. Through the Brussels conference, we aim to assist Syria on this difficult path," she stated.

The German Foreign Ministry has announced that Berlin will allocate €300 million ($326 million) for social and reconstruction projects in Syria, as well as for assisting refugees in neighboring countries.

Additionally, the ministry confirmed that all aid will be implemented exclusively through United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
