Ongoing Airstrikes Between Ukraine and Russia Amid Ceasefire Talks

Chernihiv, Ukraine, March 16  – Russia and Ukraine continue to carry out airstrikes against each other, causing injuries and significant damage, according to officials. The future of a potential ceasefire remains uncertain, even as the war has been ongoing for three years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he supports the U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire in principle. However, he stipulated that Russian forces would continue their military operations until several key issues are resolved. Since then, both sides have engaged in heavy airstrikes, with Russia nearing the point of pushing Ukrainian forces out of their positions in the Kursk region.

Russian Ministry of Defense Claims

On Sunday, Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that its air defense units had shot down 31 Ukrainian drones.

• 16 drones in the Voronezh region
• 9 drones in Belgorod region
• The remaining drones in Rostov and Kursk regions were destroyed.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, Governor of Belgorod region, reported that three people, including a 7-year-old child, were injured in Ukrainian drone attacks. The attacks caused a fire in a house in the Gubkinsky district.

Alexander Gusev, Governor of Voronezh, reported no casualties or damage as of yet.

Russian Attacks on Ukraine

Ukrainian officials reported multiple drone strikes by Russia, one of which caused a fire in a multi-story building in the Chernihiv region. The Ukrainian emergency services are attempting to control the blaze.

Additionally, Ukraine's air force has issued warnings for drone attacks in Kyiv and other central areas. Local media in Ukraine reported multiple explosions heard around the Kyiv region. However, as of 03:00 GMT, no official information on casualties in Kyiv was available.

Uncertainty Around Ceasefire Implementation

Although discussions are ongoing about a potential ceasefire, the continuing airstrikes by both sides are complicating the situation. Experts suggest that both countries are trying to strengthen their strategic positions, which has led to uncertainty regarding the actual implementation of a ceasefire.
