Kamala Harris in Dilemma Over Political Future: Governor Run in 2026 or Presidential Election in 2028?

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has announced a timetable to make a major decision regarding her political future. Many are eagerly awaiting her final decision, particularly whether she will run for California governor in 2026 or seek the presidency again in 2028.

Harris, who lost the White House election to Donald Trump last November, is seriously considering running for governor in 2026, after the term-limited Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom steps down. A source close to Harris' political camp confirmed to Fox News Digital that Harris has told her allies she will decide by the end of summer whether to launch a gubernatorial campaign.

Since last year's election, there has been much speculation about Harris, who replaced Joe Biden as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee last summer after Biden dropped out of the race. Harris now faces two potential paths— running for California governor in 2026 or seeking the presidency again in 2028.

Early polls, which are still heavily dependent on name recognition, show that the former vice president holds a significant lead over other potential presidential contenders.

However, it remains highly uncertain whether Harris will pursue both paths. Winning the 2026 California gubernatorial race in the most populous state, which also boasts the world’s fifth-largest economy, would likely rule out a presidential bid in 2028, political analysts suggest.

Harris has an extensive political background, having served as California's district attorney, attorney general, and senator before joining Biden's 2020 ticket as vice president.

Currently, California Attorney General Rob Bonta has said he would support Harris if she runs for governor, adding that "if she runs, it will clear the field" for other Democratic candidates.

On the other hand, several Republicans are eyeing a potential gubernatorial race if Harris decides to run.

It has been nearly two decades since a Republican won a statewide election in California.
