U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he is "seriously considering" imposing extensive sanctions on Russia, particularly banking sanctions and tariffs. Trump stated that he wants to take these measures until a ceasefire and peace agreement are reached between Russia and Ukraine.

In a statement, Trump said, "As Russia continues its massive assault on Ukraine, I am considering imposing major banking sanctions, penalties, and tariffs on Russia, until a ceasefire and peace agreement are finalized."

Additionally, Trump has suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine in an effort to pressure Kyiv into agreeing to a ceasefire. Last week, he had a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Following this decision, there has been criticism of Trump's stance on Ukraine, especially after he remarked last month that the war's start was Kyiv's fault, not Russia's.

This comes at a time when Reuters recently reported that the White House is considering a plan to ease sanctions on Russia in an effort to end the war and improve diplomatic and economic relations with Moscow.

Russia, one of the world's largest oil producers, has faced thousands of sanctions from the U.S. and its allies since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
