Russia-U.S. Relations Enter a New Chapter as President Vladimir Putin Appoints New Ambassador to the U.S.
Moscow, March 6 – Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Thursday appointing Alexander Darchiev as Russia's Ambassador to the United States.
The decree, published on the Russian government's official website, confirmed the appointment nearly five months after Darchiev’s predecessor Anatoly Antonov completed his mission in Washington, DC in October 2024.
On February 28, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that during talks in Istanbul on normalizing bilateral relations, Washington had handed Moscow an official note regarding Darchiev’s appointment.
The Foreign Ministry also stated, "His departure for his service in Washington is expected to begin soon."
Darchiev, 64, is a former researcher specializing in North American affairs, particularly focusing on the U.S. and Canada. He has been serving in Russia's diplomatic corps since 1992, spending much of his career in the U.S. and Canada, where he held various positions, including adviser and minister-counselor at the Russian Embassy.
From October 2014 to January 2021, he served as Russia’s Ambassador to Canada. He then returned to Moscow to serve as the Director of the North Atlantic Department, where he worked until his recent appointment.
