Berlin, March 5: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reaffirmed the "leadership role" of U.S. President Donald Trump in a phone call on Wednesday, which could play a crucial role in restarting the peace talks process in Ukraine.

According to a statement from German government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit, "Chancellor Scholz spoke to President Zelenskyy and discussed the recent military and humanitarian situation, as well as ways to establish a just peace in Ukraine."

He further added, "The Chancellor welcomed President Zelenskyy's willingness to begin peace negotiations. Both leaders agreed that the leadership role of the U.S. President is extremely important, particularly in taking swift steps towards initiating a ceasefire and establishing lasting peace for Ukraine."

During the phone call, Scholz expressed his support for a partial truce between Russia and Ukraine covering air, sea, and energy infrastructure attacks, which would pave the way for broader diplomatic discussions for a more lasting ceasefire.

Scholz reaffirmed Germany's ongoing and firm support for Ukraine. He assured that Germany would continue to support Ukraine in close coordination with European and international partners until a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace is achieved.
