British Prime Minister Keir Starmer Calls on European Leaders to Unite for Peace in Ukraine
London, March 2, 2025 — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that Europe is facing a “once in a generation moment” as European leaders gather to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. He made this remark on Sunday at the summit in London focused on Ukraine.
“While Russia talks about peace, they continue their relentless aggression,” Starmer said. He further mentioned that he, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron, had agreed to work on a plan that will be presented to the United States.
“We need to agree on what steps will come out of this meeting to establish peace through strength, which will benefit everyone,” Starmer said.
The meeting was somewhat overshadowed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s dispute with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who was criticized by Trump on Friday at the White House. However, Starmer is using this opportunity to restart peace talks and stated, “I am not for ramping up rhetoric, I am for establishing peace.”
Additionally, Starmer proposed the formation of a European military force to support a ceasefire, which could involve a “coalition of willing nations.”
He said, “If we reach a deal, it must be defended, because the worst scenario would be a temporary pause in the fighting, and then Putin attacks again.”
Meanwhile, European leaders have pledged to increase military spending for Ukraine, with Starmer promising to raise military expenditure to 2.5% of GDP by 2027.
French President Emmanuel Macron said, “We must move towards a more united and independent Europe, which I have been advocating for years.”
