Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance strongly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when he sought U.S. security assistance to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Trump told Zelenskyy, "Your behavior is disrespectful." The Ukrainian president was asking for U.S. assurances to ensure his country’s safety from further Russian aggression. Trump responded, saying, "You should be more grateful."
Vice President Vance also commented, "You are acting very disrespectfully." He warned Zelenskyy that debating Trump in front of the U.S. media was inappropriate. Trump stated that Ukrainian soldiers are extraordinarily brave and emphasized the significance of an economic agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Trump made remarks about Ukraine’s mineral resources, stating, “The United States has very important mineral resources, which will be used for artificial intelligence and military weapons development.”
Zelenskyy referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “killer” and a “terrorist,” telling Trump, “There should be no compromises with a killer.” However, Trump claimed that Europe's support has been much less compared to that of the U.S.
Zelenskyy met with Trump at the White House during his visit, and Trump mentioned that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are in the final stages. The Trump administration is also preparing a deal that would give the U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral resources in exchange for support.
Trump told the media that a trilateral meeting between Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S. would not be an "internal love match" and would likely be very challenging.
