Moscow: A high-level meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump could take place as early as next week, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday. This could be the first meeting between the leaders of the two nations in several years.

Peskov stated, "A meeting between Putin and Trump could happen at the end of February. However, it could also take place at a later date, as organizing such a high-level meeting requires time and extensive preparation," he added.

Regarding the Russia-U.S. talks held in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, Peskov mentioned that the main objective was to restore bilateral relations. "The main task right now is precisely what is happening at this moment. This topic is primarily about reviving relations, followed by their full restoration," he said.

Under the Biden administration, Russia-U.S. relations had become strained, especially after the outbreak of the Ukraine war in February 2022. During his previous presidency (2017-2021), Trump was known for his friendly relations with Putin. Trump returned to the White House last month.

Peskov emphasized that repairing ties between Russia and the U.S. would be a gradual process that requires sustained diplomatic efforts.

"It is impossible to fix everything in one day or even a week. The road ahead is long, and much work remains. However, a crucial first step was taken yesterday," he said.

Peskov further mentioned that while it is too early to draw definitive conclusions from the talks, the initial progress is encouraging.

The discussions between Russia and the U.S. in Saudi Arabia were aimed at mending relations, resolving the Ukraine crisis, and preparing for the Putin-Trump meeting.
