The Kremlin has further commented on the phone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin earlier this week, which has triggered a major wave of diplomatic activity regarding the war in Ukraine.
On Sunday, a spokesperson for the Russian president said that through this phone call, Russia and the United States would now discuss peace, not war.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, "This is a powerful signal that we will now try to solve problems through dialogue."
Peskov also mentioned that Western sanctions would not obstruct Russia-US talks and pointed out that these sanctions could be "lifted as quickly as imposed."
While many details of the conversation have not been made public, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said it was painful for him to learn that Trump’s first phone call was to Moscow, not Kyiv.
