Chinese President Xi Jinping has accepted Russia’s invitation to participate in the event marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, to be held in Moscow. The news was confirmed by Russia’s state news agency TASS on Monday.

Russian Ambassador Igor Morgulov informed journalists in China, "Chinese President Xi Jinping has accepted the invitation to participate in the celebrations in Moscow on May 9, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in the 'Great Patriotic War.'"

In December, the Kremlin had announced that it had sent invitations to "many countries" to join the event. The Soviet Union lost 27 million people during World War II, including a significant number from Ukraine.

The Soviet Union defeated Nazi forces in 1945 and reached Berlin, where Adolf Hitler committed suicide, and the Soviet Red Victory Flag was raised over the Reichstag.

Meanwhile, Xi Jinping has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to China to attend the event commemorating the end of World War II, which is planned for September.
