Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the United States on February 12-13 at the invitation of President Donald Trump, where he will hold bilateral talks with the US President. The announcement of the visit was made on Friday (February 7) by India's Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri.
Misri stated that during this working visit, Modi will engage in bilateral talks with Trump and discuss key aspects of the India-US strategic relationship in various formats.
The announcement of the visit comes at a time when there is ongoing debate within India regarding the deportation of 104 Indian immigrants from the United States under Trump's immigration policy. These immigrants were sent to Amritsar as part of this policy. During his visit, Modi is also expected to meet with business leaders and interact with the Indian community living in the US.
This visit will strengthen the existing ties between the two countries, with Misri noting that Modi was one of the first world leaders to congratulate Trump after his election victory.
Amid criticism from opposition parties in India, particularly regarding the treatment of immigrants by the US, the issue may be raised during the Modi-Trump meeting. Additionally, boosting bilateral trade relations will also be a key agenda. India is eager to enhance its trade relations with the US and make it easier for its citizens to obtain skilled worker visas.
The US is India's largest trading partner. In 2023-24, bilateral trade between the two nations exceeded $118 billion, with India recording a trade surplus of $32 billion.
Furthermore, India is also keen to avoid the high tariffs that Trump had previously threatened on US products.
