Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump participated in the National Prayer Breakfast held at the Capitol Hill. This event is a tradition that spans over 70 years, where lawmakers from both major political parties come together for a religious ceremony. Trump also delivered a speech at a separate prayer breakfast organized by a private group.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first president to attend this event in 1953, and since then, every president has given a speech at this occasion. This year’s prayer breakfast had Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan (New Hampshire) and Republican Senator Roger Marshall (Kansas) as the honorary co-chairs.

In 2019, Trump gave a controversial speech during his final prayer breakfast of his first term. His speech came the day after the Senate’s decision to acquit him in his first impeachment trial. He made harsh remarks against Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Senator Mitt Romney, who voted to convict him in the impeachment trial.

“I don’t like people who use their faith in ways that they know are wrong,” Trump said at that time.

In 2023, the National Prayer Breakfast split into two separate events — one at Capitol Hill, attended mostly by lawmakers and government officials, and another larger private event where thousands of people attended.

In 2023 and 2024, Democratic President Joe Biden spoke at the Capitol Hill event, and his remarks were livestreamed to the other gathering.
