Manila, February 5, 2025: The Philippine House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, marking the first time in the country’s history that such a measure has been taken against a sitting vice president.
House Secretary-General Reginald Velasco announced during a plenary session that 215 members of the House had supported the impeachment motion, receiving more than two-thirds of the votes.
According to the Philippine constitution, once an impeachment motion receives one-third of the support from the House, it is forwarded to the upper house, the Senate, where 23 senators will serve as jurors. This could lead to Duterte’s removal from office and disqualification from holding future government positions.
Duterte is expected to remain in office until the Senate completes its trial, though a trial date has not yet been set.
This is the first time in Philippine history that an impeachment motion has been filed against a vice president. Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, has faced several accusations, including threats to assassinate Marcos and his family, betrayal of public trust, and misuse of large amounts of public funds. She has referred to these accusations as a political vendetta and denied all the allegations.
