Bangladesh Women's National Footballer Matsushima Sumaiya has claimed that she has been receiving death and rape threats on social media recently.
In a post on her verified Facebook page, the Saff Championship-winning footballer raised this concern.
Ms. Sumaiya wrote, "Since I chose this path, my dream was to inspire young students whose parents only emphasize on academics."
"I wanted to show that with unwavering determination and dedication, any obstacle can be overcome. But, after sacrificing everything, from education to family time and even Eid holidays, I served a country that does not even appreciate our struggle. Today, I regret that decision," she added.
Matsushima Sumaiya further wrote, "I fought with my parents for football. I thought the country would stand by me. But the reality is different."
A few days ago, 18 players from the national women's team withdrew from practice demanding the resignation of head coach Peter Butler.
They accused Butler of mental harassment and abusive behavior, with Sumaiya being one of the players involved.
Mr. Butler, however, had been unable to comment on these allegations in the media. Recently, in Joypurhat, there was some disorder related to women's football, and a scheduled women's football match was canceled. Bangladesh's female footballers are now facing security concerns.
