Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa Arrives in Turkey for Second International Visit, Discussing Economic Recovery and Security Assurance
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in Turkey on Tuesday for talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This is his second international visit since the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Al-Sharaa will meet with Erdogan in Turkey's capital, Ankara, after arriving from Saudi Arabia, where he sought assistance from Gulf countries for Syria's reconstruction and economic recovery.
Turkey, which has maintained close relations with al-Sharaa, reopened its diplomatic mission in the Syrian Arab Republic and sent its spy chief and foreign minister for talks after HTS ousted Assad on December 8.
The main focus of their discussions will be to take joint steps for "economic recovery, sustainable stability, and security." Despite its own economic crisis, Turkey is keen to support Syria's reconstruction efforts.
Additionally, Turkey wants to secure Damascus's cooperation in combating Kurdish militants, especially in northeastern Syria, where the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been fighting against Turkey-backed forces.
