Potential for Permanent Gaza Ceasefire: Second Phase of Talks to Begin, Israel Prepares to Send Delegation to Qatar
Israel is preparing to send a high-level delegation to Doha, Qatar, to discuss the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced this on Tuesday.
Under the main agreement, a 42-day ceasefire was implemented, during which Palestinian prisoners were released through a prisoner exchange. Now, discussions for the second phase are set to begin, which could open up potential pathways to bring an end to the war. These talks will be held in Qatar, with representatives from both Israel and Hamas participating.
The Netanyahu government has stated that the topics to be discussed in the second phase include the next steps related to the released prisoners, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and future security arrangements for Gaza. Additionally, discussions will cover the release of more prisoners from Hamas, as well as the necessary conditions for establishing long-term peace in Gaza.
During the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire, 33 prisoners were released, and approximately 1,900 Palestinian prisoners were freed from Israeli jails. According to the terms of the agreement, after the ceasefire took effect, food, fuel, and medical assistance began flowing into Gaza, and the rehabilitation process for the affected areas is ongoing.
Meanwhile, there is uncertainty regarding the success of the second phase of talks. Both Israeli authorities and Hamas have made their positions clear even before the talks officially begin.
Now, as the discussions are set to commence in Doha, all eyes will be on whether these talks will successfully lead to a permanent end to the Gaza conflict, and whether a stable peace environment can be established in the region.
