Brussels, Feb 3: British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer visited NATO Headquarters in Brussels and urged European leaders to increase support for Ukraine, especially in light of skepticism surrounding aid from the United States.
Starmer is meeting with European Council leaders to discuss security and the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. In the meeting, Sir Keir will call on European countries to increase pressure on Russia, especially with US President Donald Trump's threats of further sanctions against Russia, which have left President Putin concerned about his country's economy.
Starmer said, "We need to see all allies stepping up – particularly in Europe. Trump has threatened more sanctions on Russia, and it's clear that Putin is worried about the state of the Russian economy."
He added, "I’m here to work with our European partners to continue the pressure, particularly targeting energy revenues and the companies supplying his missile factories to crush Putin's war machine."
The UK has already sanctioned around 2,100 Russian individuals and entities, the majority since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Starmer's visit to Europe comes at a time when Downing Street has responded to comments made by President Trump, who referred to the UK as "out of line" and threatened an international trade war, which caused a negative impact on European markets.
Trump stated, "The UK is out of line, but I think this can be worked out." He also said, "Discussions with Sir Keir Starmer have been very nice, and we've had a couple of meetings. We understand each other very well."
Starmer's official spokesperson stated that the Prime Minister fully trusts Trump to keep his word and hopes that Trump will follow through on his promises.
