Brussels, February 3: French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that Russia's invasion of Ukraine and U.S. President Donald Trump's policies are forcing Europe to take more responsibility for its physical and economic security.

Macron made these remarks as he arrived in Brussels to attend a summit of European Union leaders, where the discussion focused on Europe-U.S. relations and boosting Europe's military defense capabilities.

The start of the summit was overshadowed by Trump's announcement that he would soon impose tariffs on goods imported from the European Union, having already taken similar measures on products from Canada, Mexico, and China. European leaders warned Trump that they would take retaliatory action if he initiated a trade war.

Macron said Trump's policies are pushing the European Union to become more independent. He stated, “The COVID pandemic and Russia's aggression against Ukraine were moments of awakening for Europe.”

He added, “What is happening today in Ukraine, and the policies of President Trump’s new administration, are pushing Europeans to become more united and active on matters of their collective security.”
