Washington, January 28 – President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order introducing sweeping changes to military policies, including potential restrictions on transgender service members, reinstatement of troops dismissed for refusing COVID-19 vaccines, and the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
Restrictions on Transgender Troops
The executive order directs Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to review the Pentagon’s policies on transgender service members, paving the way for future restrictions. Trump argued that individuals identifying outside their biological sex may not align with the "respectful, honest, and disciplined lifestyle" needed for military readiness.
LGBTQ advocacy groups, including Lambda Legal and the Human Rights Campaign, condemned the move and vowed to oppose it, citing discrimination and harm to military inclusivity.
Development of Space-Based Missile Defense System
Trump also instructed the U.S. Space Command and Space Force to develop a space-based missile defense system aimed at intercepting threats launched from space. The initiative is seen as a modern iteration of President Ronald Reagan’s 1980s "Strategic Defense Initiative," commonly referred to as "Star Wars."
Reinstatement of Troops Dismissed Over COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates
In a significant reversal of previous policies, Trump ordered the reinstatement of nearly 8,200 service members dismissed in 2021 for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. These troops will return to their prior ranks and receive full back pay, a move Trump described as "righting a wrong."
Abolishment of DEI Programs
The executive order also calls for the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the military and Coast Guard. Trump criticized DEI initiatives as promoting "racist or sexist ideologies" and directed the Department of Defense to take steps to ensure a focus on unity and readiness.
A Shift in Military Strategy
These policy changes reflect Trump’s hardline approach to military discipline, unity, and readiness. While supporters argue these moves prioritize operational efficiency and national security, critics warn they could undermine inclusivity and morale within the armed forces.
The executive order underscores the Trump administration’s continued efforts to reshape the U.S. military’s policies and strategic direction.
