This was the first phone call between the two leaders since Trump’s inauguration. Modi announced in a post that he congratulated Trump on his historic victory for his second term.
Modi said, "We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security."
Modi further added, "I am delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. I congratulated him on his historic second-term victory."
Bilateral trade between India and the United States surpassed $118 billion in 2023/24, with India posting a trade surplus of $32 billion. The two countries are working to strengthen their relations, particularly positioning India as a more significant strategic partner for the United States in efforts to counter China.
Additionally, diplomats from both countries are planning a meeting between the two leaders by February.
