The owner of a £6 million luxury mansion, once rented by British singer Adele, has claimed that Adele’s remarks about the property being haunted have negatively impacted its sale.
In 2012, Adele rented the Grade II-listed "Lock House," located in Partridge Green, West Sussex, for six months.
Recently, the owner submitted a planning proposal to transform the property from a single dwelling into three residential units and convert an existing garage and flat into a separate cottage.
However, in the planning application, the owner noted, “Adele’s comments have obstructed efforts to sell the property. She suggested that the house was haunted. This remark continues to have a negative impact on the property’s reputation to this day.”
‘A chilling feeling’
In a 2012 interview with Anderson Cooper on CBS, Adele said, “Some parts of this house are quite scary. I wouldn’t want to be here alone; it gives me the creeps.” Although she didn’t explicitly use the word ‘haunted,’ the owner claims that her comments tarnished the property’s image.
After Adele vacated the house, it was re-listed for sale but received no offers. Later, it was rented to a tenant who intended to use it for a business but instead operated a residential retreat with 11 guest bedrooms and a fitness boot camp.
The owner further stated that they have been trying to sell the property for 14 years. The only offer received was in August 2020, but the prospective buyer withdrew after learning of the property’s supposed ‘haunted’ reputation.
The property’s history
Originally constructed in 1909, the house underwent major reconstruction in 1940. In 1971, it was divided into 26 separate lots and sold at auction. It was later owned by the church and served as the Convent of the Visitation.
Currently, the house boasts 10 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a tennis court, a helipad, and a cinema room.
The current owner purchased the property in 2003. However, they claim that Adele’s comments have posed significant challenges to selling the mansion ever since.
