The U.S. President Donald Trump administration, on January 22, 2025, announced the suspension of the refugee resettlement program through an executive order, resulting in the cancellation of travel plans for refugees approved for travel before the January 27 deadline.

As a result of this move, thousands of refugees who had been approved to enter the U.S. after a lengthy process are now stranded in various locations around the world.

The executive order, signed on Monday, states that the entry of refugees into the U.S. will be suspended until further notice, and the acceptance of new refugees will be completely halted "until further notice."

Additionally, agencies overseeing the refugee processing and arrival informed stakeholders that "refugee arrivals to the United States have been suspended for the time being."

Furthermore, refugees who had been approved to enter before January 27 and had booked flights were also informed that their travel opportunities were now closed.
