On Tuesday, Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio was sworn in as the U.S. Secretary of State, with the ceremony conducted by U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
Standing alongside his wife, Jeanette, whom he thanked for her support, Rubio declared that he would fulfill the "promises" made by Donald Trump during his campaign.
"The primary promise that Trump made regarding foreign policy is that the main goal of the U.S. Department of State will be to advance the national interests of the United States," Rubio said after the ceremony while speaking to the media. "He has given us a clear mandate."
Rubio further stated, "Everything we do must be justified by the answer to one of three questions: Does it make us stronger? Does it make us safer? And does it make us more prosperous? If it doesn't answer any of those three, we will not do it."
Having previously passed his nomination hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio's appointment was approved by the Senate's upper chamber on Monday.
Rubio has served as a Florida senator since 2011, and was nominated by Trump after his victory in the November White House election.
Marco Rubio is among the least controversial figures in the Republican Party, having received bipartisan support for his appointment to Trump's Cabinet.
