Pope Francis has described former U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to deport immigrants as "regrettable." He said, "If this is true, it would be a shame, as it would put additional pressure on the poor."

This comment from Pope Francis comes as the Trump administration has pledged to issue various orders as part of its first-day actions to begin deportations. In 2016, in response to questions about the plan to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border, Pope Francis had said, "The person who wants to build walls cannot be Christian."

Pope Francis, who grew up in an Italian immigrant family in Argentina, has long focused on the issue of immigration. He has consistently urged governments to help welcome, protect, and integrate immigrants. According to him, the human dignity and rights of immigrants are far more important than national security.

In addition, many U.S. bishops have opposed Trump's plan. Among them, Bishop Robert McElroy has stated that such policies are not consistent with Catholic teachings. Similarly, Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago has also protested against the mass deportation in Gaza, saying, "This not only deeply concerns us but also pains our hearts."

Pope Francis emphasized the need to protect immigrants' rights, stating, "Governments' responsibility is not just to protect borders and communities but also to uphold the human dignity of all people."
