ASEAN Urges Myanmar's Military Rulers to Prioritize Peace Over Elections

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has called on Myanmar's military government to prioritize peace over its plan to hold elections. Since the military ousted the elected government through a coup, Myanmar has faced escalating armed rebellion, plunging the country into severe crisis.

On Sunday, ASEAN foreign ministers told Myanmar's representative that stopping the conflict and establishing peace should be the main priority, not elections. Malaysia's foreign minister stated that Myanmar has been urged to ensure swift humanitarian aid and initiate dialogue among all parties.

ASEAN Chairman Malaysia announced the appointment of former diplomat Othman Hashim as a special envoy on the Myanmar crisis. Hashim will soon visit Myanmar to persuade all parties to implement ASEAN's five-point peace plan.

Discussion on Regional Tensions

Malaysia's foreign minister further stated that ASEAN ministers expressed concern over China's activities in the South China Sea. China's claims of sovereignty and clashes with ASEAN countries have complicated the situation. The ministers urged for accelerated discussions between ASEAN and China to establish a code of conduct.

The foreign minister of the Philippines noted that it's time to start discussing the core issues, which should be legally binding and impact third parties. ASEAN ministers emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
