Kolkata, January 18: The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court has found 33-year-old Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a female doctor at a state-run medical college and hospital in Kolkata last August. This incident sparked widespread protests across India last year.

Judge Anirban Das, who oversaw the fast-tracked trial, stated, "Your guilt is proven. You are being convicted." Roy's lawyers, who have not yet commented on the verdict, argue that there were significant discrepancies in the investigation and forensic reports, claiming that one person alone could not have committed such a brutal crime.

Roy was accused of the murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, whose bloodied body was found in a classroom at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last year. The case triggered nationwide protests against sexual violence.

Prosecutors suggest that Roy could face the death penalty or life imprisonment. However, Roy's family has argued that such a horrific crime could not have been committed by a single person. The victim's father said, "Our daughter could not have met such a horrific end by a single man. We will remain in pain and agony until all the culprits are punished."

Following the verdict, around 200 police officers were deployed at the Sealdah court for security, and protesters chanted, "Hang him, hang him."

Several doctors also held protests in solidarity with the victim. Dr. Aniket Mahato, a spokesperson for junior doctors, stated, "We will continue protesting on the streets until justice is served."

This incident has been compared to the 2012 Delhi bus gang-rape and murder case, which led to demands for enhanced security measures at government hospitals.
