Beirut, January 18: Lebanon's new President Joseph Aoun has urged the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon under the terms of the November ceasefire agreement during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

A statement from Aoun's office said that during the meeting, he stated, "Israel's ongoing operations on land and in the air, especially the blowing up of houses and destruction of border villages, completely contradicts the ceasefire agreement and is contrary to Lebanon's sovereignty and the will of the international community."

Following the meeting, UN Secretary-General Guterres said he would exert maximum efforts to ensure the "secure" withdrawal of Israeli forces by the January 26 deadline, as stipulated in the agreement reached on November 27.

President Aoun also emphasized Lebanon's commitment to the necessity of Israeli troop withdrawal from the occupied southern territories within the agreed timeline.
