Ottawa, January 17 – Canada is ready to respond to potential tariffs from its top trade partner, the United States, as Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced. On Friday, she stated that if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with his tariff threats, Canada is prepared to respond as early as Monday.
Given that 75% of Canada’s exports are with the United States, such tariffs could have a severe economic impact. Canadian officials have previously emphasized that these tariffs would not only harm Canada but also have detrimental effects on the U.S. economy.
Minister Joly made these comments while attending a meeting with provincial and territorial leaders in Ottawa. She warned that the imposition of tariffs could have significant negative repercussions for both countries.
Trump's threats are expected to put pressure on the economic relationship between the two nations. Meanwhile, Canada has indicated its willingness to continue diplomatic discussions regarding the tariff issue.
