Prague — A devastating fire in a restaurant in the city of Most, northern Czech Republic, has claimed the lives of 6 people and left 6 others seriously injured, officials reported on Sunday.

The fire broke out in the U Kojota restaurant before midnight on Saturday while the establishment was still open. Firefighters have indicated that the likely cause of the blaze was a gas heater that overturned, causing an explosion.

More than 60 firefighters worked until around 1 a.m. to bring the fire under control. The injured were treated in hospitals in Most and nearby cities. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Interior Minister Vit Rakusan, who visited the scene on Sunday morning, stated that approximately 30 people were evacuated from the restaurant and a neighboring apartment building.

Most Mayor Marek Hrvol described the incident as the most tragic event in the city’s recent history.
