Syria's New Government Faces Challenges, International Cooperation Needed - IOM Chief Amy Pope

Amy Pope, Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), stated that the leaders of Syria's new interim government recognize the significant challenges ahead and believe international community support is essential.

She emphasized that Syria's leaders understand their responsibilities and are seeking international cooperation to fulfill them. Pope added that the new leadership is working to establish relationships with the international community, foster inclusivity, and build partnerships with other governments. However, questions remain about their capacity for effective implementation.

According to IOM data, nearly 100,000 people have returned to Syria following the ousting of the Assad government, with many hoping to return to their old homes. Simultaneously, 85,000 people have left Syria via Lebanon.

Pope's visit to Syria made her one of the first UN agency heads to travel to the country under the new administration.
